Vision and Goals
The Winslow Township Elementary School #1 Library serves as an integral part of the school educational program. Mrs. Sheridan administers the library program and provides regular information literacy education through library classes and collaboration with classroom teachers. Library services support and enrich the curriculum, promote a love of reading and encourage life-long learning.
The mission of the School #1Library program is to provide access to information in a variety of formats and empower each patron to use this information effectively, efficiently and ethically.
The School #1 Library will:
- Provide an environment that supports the curriculum and stimulates learning.
- Provide an up-to-date collection and technologies that support the curriculum and student and staff needs and interests.
- Provide opportunities for collaboration with staff to integrate information literacy skills with the curriculum.
- Provide ongoing exposure to literature in a variety of formats that stimulate reading enrichment.
Weekly Library Classes
Students visit the library once a week for instruction and to borrow a library book. The book is always due back to the library the following week. Children are encouraged to be responsible for their book, keeping it in a safe place at home and returning it on time.
During the Second Marking Period, each grade will be covering a variety of topics during library class.
1st Grade: Students are learning the difference between fiction and nonfiction. They will also be able to locate nonfiction books in the library and choose books that are of interest to them.
2nd Grade: The children are learning about the different topics found in the nonfiction area of the library. They are using the table of content to locate information in a book and will be introduced to the glossary and index.
3rd Grade: Third graders are reviewing the table of content, glossary, and index found in many nonfiction books. They will be introduced to the online cataloging system for our library and will practice looking up books in the library using the computer terminals.
