WELCOME TO SCHOOL #4

NUTRITIOUS CELEBRATIONS
AT WINSLOW SCHOOL # 4

As was noted earlier in the school year, The Winslow Township Board of Education is committed to:
• Providing students with healthy and nutritious foods
• Encouraging the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat milk and whole grain
• Supporting healthy eating habits through nutrition education
• Encouraging students to select and consume all components of the school meal(s)
• Providing students with the opportunity to engage in daily physical activity.

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Agriculture have established new standards which have become part of the Child Nutrition Program Regulations required by the federal government. Under these new guidelines, the following items may not be served anywhere on school property at anytime before the end of the school day:
• Foods of minimal nutritional value ( soda water, water ice, chewing gum, candy coated popcorn)
• All foods and beverage items listing sugar, in any form, as the first ingredient
• All forms of candy

So, how does all of that affect celebrations at Winslow School #4? I am requesting that all families in our school make a special effort to abide by these regulations, especially when sending party snacks and refreshments for classroom celebrations. Please note that effective immediately food items for class parties, birthdays, and snacks must be store bought and in the original container with the ingredients listed. Any item that has sugar listed (in any form) as the first ingredient will not be permitted.

Should you have questions please feel free to stop by or contact me via phone. As we work together to improve the quality of celebration snacks and refreshments, we will also be teaching our children about the benefits of eating healthy foods and snacks.
