NJHS Induction

singing anthemOn May 1st, the National Junior Honor Society at Winslow Middle School inducted 33 new members. Two honorary members were also inducted. They were Malcolm Ali Davis and Mrs. Aiello (chorus teacher). Mrs. Morganti, Mrs. Yanez and Mrs. Mitchell (Board of Education members) were on hand for the event.

After the procession of the members, Tara Koehler sang the National Anthem. The Middle School Chorus members had special music prepared for the event. Dante Lorenzo was a featured singer during one musical number and Malcolm Ali Davis was a soloist in another song.

njhs inductionThe five cardinal principles of the National Junior Honor Society were explained to the inductees and the audience. Evan Cuneo and Sarah Rondeau explained the principle of Scholarship. Megan Shevlin and Tara Koehler discussed Leadership. Kerri McCarty and Iyore Olaye explained Service. Amira Howard and Allison Zumwalde discussed Character, and Courtney Aderinto and Francesca Morganti explained Citizenship. A candle was lit for each of these principles, as well a sixth candle in remembrance of Domonique Dezii, whom we lost this school year.

After Mrs. Ceaser and Mr. Marella presented certificates to the new inductees, they congratulated the new inductees and offered words of inspiration to carry on with their commendable work ethic and attitude in school and in the community. It was stressed to always “give back” to the community and help others.

Assemblyman Greenwald
Mr. Greenwald with Mrs. Aiello and Malcolm Ali Davis, the two honorary inductees.

Refreshments were being served by the HSA, when another guest speaker arrived to congratulate the newest members of the NJHS. Assemblyman Louis Greenwald was taking classes in Atlantic City, but took time from his schedule to come to Winslow and share his insight with the NJHS. His message was to always try to improve.

Mr. Greenwald stayed for a photo session with the students who were delighted to meet him. In 2005, Mr. Greenwald had been honored and recognized for his accomplishments and dedication to public service by the Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce with its Pinnacle Award for Legislator of the year. It was great to have him take time from his busy schedule to visit with us.
