Parent Letter: Protocols for Immigration Officials

February 13, 2026

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Winslow Township School District is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of immigration status, national origin, or religion, can attend public school safely and without fear. A student’s immigration status does not affect their right to attend school or access educational services in our district.

In light of the recent news coverage involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), I wanted to reach out to you and share information about the district’s position and protocols should an ICE official contact one of our schools.

The district fully complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Personally identifiable student information may not be shared without parental consent unless the Winslow Township School District is presented with a valid, dated judicial order, or a signed judicial warrant. Internal ICE warrants or similar documents do not meet this standard. Protecting student privacy is a responsibility we take very seriously.

If a school receives any inquiry related to the immigration status of a student or family, staff are required to immediately refer the matter to my office and I will consult with our legal counsel. Building-level staff are not authorized to respond to or comply with such requests. The district has detailed procedures in place for handling any virtual or in person inquiries involving students, and these procedures are designed to ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption. Above all, we remain committed to maintaining schools that are caring, supportive, and secure.

Should your child express anxiety, fear, or concern related to these issues, please notify your child’s building principal, school counselor, or teacher so we can provide the appropriate support. We also encourage parents to be mindful of the information children encounter online and on social media, and to consider limiting access to content that may increase fear or confusion.

The Winslow Township School District is dedicated to educating and protecting every child entrusted to our care. If you have any questions, please contact my office. Thank you for your continued support.

Be Well, Be Kind, and Be Safe!

Respectfully,

Mark Pease, Interim Superintendent
